Happy THANKSgiving

Posted on 10:51 by Unknown
As I look back at all that I have posted about, I can't help but be thankful that I have so much to be thankful for. I recognize, full and well, that I live a very charmed and blessed life. I have been fortunate enough to experience many places, things, people, and joy... way more than one person should.

To go a little deeper, the holidays are hard for me. In fact, I know that the holidays are hard for A LOT of people. There is nothing that reminds you more of being alone, love lost, people who are no longer with us, or just how hard life can be at times, than the holidays. In the midst of the sadness, anger, and all of the other emotions, I will try my hardest to choose joy. I will try to remember all that I have to be thankful for.

After all, life is about choices. We all have the choice to choose well or to choose a life that reflect otherwise.

I am thankful that I have so much to be thankful for. I am thankful that I have the opportunity to choose well and focus on the things that I am thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving. Choose well.

My friend Jennifer is RIDICULOUSLY generous, thoughtful, and caring.

Jennifer and I met while I was living in Arizona; we worked at Cornerstone together. Toward the end of my time in Arizona, Jen became one of my closest friends. Jen cheered me on while finishing school, when updating my resume with a college degree, and while applying for countless jobs in Nashville.

For the past 3 years, Jen has been there for me through the ups and downs. The disaster that was the free trip to Ireland, the half-way move to Nashville, crappy jobs, my dad dying, my grandpa dying, friendships ending and beginning, wonderful jobs, fun trips, great concerts and so much more.

Jennifer is another one of those people who have welcomed me into the family. Countless dinners, family vacations, and other fun things. I am BEYOND blessed.

I am thankful for my friend Jen.

I am thankful for the people in my life that know me. For the people that have taken the time to get to know my hopes and fears, my likes and dislikes, my joy and tears.

I am thankful for the people that know that the holidays are tough and remember, no matter how long it has been between seeing one another.

I am thankful for the people that ask me how I am and then wait for the real answer, the answer that is so much more than "great, fine, ok, or wonderful".

I am thankful for the people that send text messages with the perfect words.

I am thankful for the people that know just what to say or do and when to say or do it.

I am thankful for the people that I call friend.

I am oh so thankful for the families that have welcomed me into their homes and hearts.

Klingaman Family: when I moved to Arizona, B told me that his family was my family. He wasn't kidding. Mama and Papa K provided a much needed saf place in Arizona. Even after leaving Arizona, they have still been so good to me. I am beyond blessed by Mama, Papa, B, Katelynn, and Ems. What an amazingly loving and welcoming family.

The Harveys: Ever since high school, I have been spending both Thanksgiving and Christmas at the Harvey house. I always have a place to sit at their holiday meals, and any other meal throughout the year to be honest. Jim and Teresa have been second parents to me in so many ways. I am forever thankful for them. Even further, I am thankful that Kim, Kyle, and Cody also welcomed me in. I love the Harvey fam. So thankful. Papa Harv, Teres, Kimber, Kyle, and Co, THANK YOU!

The Knudsens: Kristi and I met our freshman year of college at SPU and have been friends ever since. I worked at a church that her dad was the pastor of, and am so thankful for that season. Craig and Karen have loved me even when I was hard to love. They even made it possible for me to continue my education when I wasn't sure how I was going to make it happen. As with the Harvey's, the whole Knudsen fam has welcomed me in. Being a pastor fam, Christmas is a very special day for just the fam... yet they invited me into that special day. Words can't express my gratitude. Craig, Karen, Kristi, Kelsey and Tyler, THANK YOU.

Page Fam: Ricky, Nova and Elisha, Thank you for always making me feel so at home at Casa Page. Thank you for bringing me in on the pajama tradition. Thank you for making me feel like I belong.- THANK YOU.

Freighbor/Neighbors: Jeanine, Kevin, Sammy, and Paige... Last year, Thanksgiving was tough. So many emotions were running so high. You all provided a sense of normalcy. Paige's freak out helped to take my mind off of everything else that was going on. It was just so nice to have a safe place when Mom and Clyde were on their cruise and the poop was hitting the fan. Thank you for being such amazing neighbors. - THANK YOU.

Maxin Fam: Mama Maxin, John, Heffer, and Ro, my Seattle family. I will never forget the Thanksgiving I spent with you all while I was living in Seattle. Thank you for opening your home to me. Thank you for letting me paint the hallway ha ha ha and for leaving it up for years to be admired. Thank you for letting me do COUNTLESS loads of laundry at your house. Thank you for the steak dinners. I know that I have a home in Seattle, and I am so thankful. - THANK YOU.

O'Connor Fam: MY Mo. Mo has been another parent ever since Jimmy and I were in Kindergarten together at Cabrillo Elementary. Mo helped me get ready for my prom and took me to countless NSync and Kelly Clarkson concerts. I have had every too many parties to count at The Scoreboard AKA The Family Bar, with Mo and Joe being the best hosts a girl can ask for. Jimmy, Bridget and Caitlin have been so sweet as to always welcome me in without hesitation. THANK YOU Mo and Joe and the rest of the O'Connor Fam.

The holidays are hard for me. Really hard. This holiday season is going to be particularly rough with it being the year anniversary of my dad dying and the first holiday since my sweet Grandpa died. Because of this, I am even more thankful for the families that have welcomed me into their homes and have made me feel like family.

I am so very thankful for creativity.
Lighting and production that is done well awakens something within me.
I absolutely love seeing things come together.
Today, I saw World of Color at Disney's California Adventure and it left me spechless. I stood in awe of the colors and lights and fire and just sheer genius. It was one of the most beautiful things that I have ever seen.
Thankful!

I am thankful for the rain.

I love days like today where the rain just pours down.

The rain is refreshing. I love the smells that fill the air when the rain is here; the smell of fireplaces at nights, of fresh rain on the ground, and of coffee.

San Diego doesn't get much rain, so when we do, we love it.

THANKFUL.

I am thankful for Disneyland.

It's true.

I am the grown person who geeks out over Disneyland. I love all the Hidden Mickey hype. I love the snow at Christmas time. I love it all.

I went last night with some friends for a private party, during which there were less than 10,000 people in the park. It was crazy how empty it was. We had a wonderful time. We laughed a lot. We even rode 11 rides in just 3.5 hours.

I am going on Sunday for my friend Eric's birthday, we are meeting up with a whole mixture of people while we are there.

THEN, I am going Friday, Saturday and Sunday with some dear friends from Arizona.

Yup, 5 days in a matter of 11 days.

I am thankful for Disneyland. It is like therapy. :)

At the beginning of January, I posted this blog...

Here is where I am at with those resolutions:

to live a better story... I can stand with my head held high knowing that I am living a better life than I lived in 2009.

to go on dates... I haven't gone on a single date in 2010. That isn't the most fun thing to admit to. Some of that is because I am picky. Most of that is because I don't really get asked out.

to put myself out there... YUP!

to believe in myself more... ABSOLUTELY!

to pursue my dreams... Thanks to people like my Freighbor and Kira, I have been able to do this.

to love and be loved... YES.

to write more... I blogged more in 2009 than I did in 2010, but I am pleased with the content of this year's blog so I am ok with that.

to continue to take care of myself... Yes.

to pay down my debt... VERY MUCH SO!

to live and love where I am at... Trying my best!

I am BEYOND thankful for the COUNTLESS generous people in my life.

Concerts. Dinners. Football Games. Trips. Surprise Packages. Clothes. Make-Up. Massages. Cups. Cash. Manicures and Pedicures. Haircuts. Facials. Mixed CDs.

I am one of those people who is ridiculously blessed by the people in my life. I have never had a need go un-met. If I need something, truly need it, I often times don't even have to ask. To go even further, I am never in want. To quote my friend Megan, "I don't know who's life I am living, but I hope they don't ask for it back." I am BEYOND blessed.

So, THANK YOU.

Thank you for the concert tickets, the countless meals, the tickets to football and basketball games, the trips to Disneyland and Sedona and Dallas and LA and so many other places, the surprise packages full of goodies, the clothes, the make-up, the massages and spa days, the manicures and pedicures, the haircuts, the facials, the mixed CD's and for so much more. Thank you for always sharing with me. Thank you for inviting me to be part of your life and all things exciting and wondering and heart breaking and saddening. Thank you for constantly blessing me.

Last year, I read Kelly Cutrone's book, If You Have To Cry, Go Outside and Other Things Your Mother Never Told You. I love me some Kelly Cutrone. If you don't know who she is, she is a publicist in the Fashion Industry with offices in both LA and New York. She is a tough cookie, but genuinely cares about her employees and clients. I never missed an episode of her show and was so excited when her book came out.

I devoured the book. Some of the book wasn't my cup of tea, but for the most part, I was challenged by what she said. There was especially one thing that really challenged me.

In the book, Kelly talked about people who would e-mail her for advice both with business and personal life. She then encouraged the reader to do the same. At the risk of butchering the eloquence that Kelly used to share, I will try to share it with you. Kelly basically said, if there is something that you want to do, but don't know what to do or where to start, seek someone out who is already doing that, ask them for advice, pick their brain, and take a risk. I found myself reading the book waiting to move. I couldn't help but feel like that was exactly what I needed to do.

If you have read this blog for any length of time, you would know that I have always wanted to work in the music industry. I want to help to make concerts and events happen. I don't need to be the person up front, I would prefer not to be, but I would love to be the one to help make it happen.

I have a wealth of knowledge and experience living right next door to me, as my neighbors have been in the industry for decades. Beyond that, my neighbors have been so kind and have introduced me to their friends who have also been in the industry for forever. Freighbor, Kevin, and Angie have been far too good to me.

Further than that, at Jeanine's birthday celebration, I met Jeanine's friend Kira who does Marketing and Promotions in the music Industry. When dinner was over, I took Kelly's advise, and asked Kira if I could pick her brain about marketing, promotions, and the music industry. Kira was so sweet and obliged.

Kira answered questions, and continues to do so. More than that, Kira has allowed me the unique opportunity of learning first-hand about the music industry. Kira has allowed me to tag along with her to shows at The Hollywood Bowl, letting me see the ins and outs of what she does. Kira invited me to be on the committee for Taste at The Cove, an event that she is the director of. More than all of this, Kira has become one of my closest friends.

I am honored to call Kira friend. If you are lucky enough to call her friend, you know what I am talking about. Kira is incredibly thoughtful and generous and is just an amazing friend.

I am thankful for Freighbor, Kevin, and Angie for always being so wonderful in answering questions, teaching me, inviting me to things, getting me tickets/passes, and for so much more.

I am thankful that Freighbor was born, had a dinner to celebrate the birth, and shares her friends with me. :)

I am thankful that I read Kelly Cutrone's book, took her advice, and took a risk.

I am thankful that Kira was so kind and receptive and was kind enough to teach me.

Today, and everyday, I am thankful for my friend Kira.

Today, I am so very thankful for thoughtful friends...

Friends that see a card that says Touche and put it in the mail from Milwaukee.

Friends who take the time to make a play list, burn a CD, put it in a package and send it on it's way.

Friends who know that I love Chick-Fil-A so they save coupons for me.

Friends who encourage me to share my voice.

Friends who send a text just to let me know that I am loved.

Friends who love generously.

Friends who challenge me to be the best me I can be.

Friends who consistently think about others.

I am beyond blessed with the most amazingly generous, talented, sweet, kind, hilarious, and most of all, thoughtful.

Google Analytics

I have a question that I hope someone reading can answer.

As I have said before, I use Google Analytics to track this blog. I like to see who is reading where and how they got here. Recently, I have seen a HUGE influx in reading happening in two particular cities.

Palo Alto and San Francisco are producing HUGE traffic on this blog. I don't know anyone in these cities who reads my blog, let alone anyone who would look at my blog over 180 times in one month. Let's be honest, I am not even on my blog that much, so why would anyone else be?

So, I guess I have two questions...

1. If you live in Palo Alto or San Francisco and read my blog, how did you find it? Thanks for reading.
2. Does anyone know if Google Reader has anything to do with this?

Help. :)

Day 15 coming later.

I am thankful for the past year.

The past 12 months have been full of tragedy, hope, love, loss, excitement, sadness, joy, peace, and so much more. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone, but I also wouldn't trade it for the world.

In the midst of the tragedy, loss, loneliness, and sadness, I have experienced hope in ways that I have never experienced before. As my friend Meg has said, "I don't know who's life I am living, but I hope they don't ask for it back!"

I have seen more concerts in a year than most see in a lifetime. I have attended and participated in events that I only dreamed of before this year. I have gone to places that I saw in magazines and wished and hope that I would get to go.

2010 was an incredible year.

I am thankful for the past 12 months.

Thirteen: Part 2

Posted on 22:22 by Unknown
As I said in the beginning of this, some days will be serious, some days will be long and some days will be short.

Today, as ridiculous as it may sound, I am so thankful that I don't have to set my alarm tomorrow morning. I don't have to get out of bed at any particular time tomorrow. This is a rarity in my life, so I try to really appreciate days like tomorrow.

I am going to respond to some e-mails, pay some bills, prepare some care packages, and do the things that I want to do.

I am thankful for days that don't require anything, especially in the midst of days that can be so busy.

Alas, I am turning in for the night without setting my alarm.

THANKFUL.

This morning, I had the privilege being part of the Coca Cola team for the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes. There were over 450 people walking with the Coca Cola team alone.

Since my job has taught me a lot about Diabetes and just what it takes to care for this disease, it was really important to me to participate. In that, it was important to put the word out and raise some funds for JDRF. Unfortunately, I lagged on putting the link up until the day before the race. FORTUNATELY, I have incredible friends.

THANK YOU Kira, Katelynn and Mama & Papa K for contributing so generously to this cause. Thank you for supporting me in yet another 5K. Thank you for supporting JDRF in finding a cure for diabetes.

I am thankful that I have such supportive friends. :)

Walk for a Cure - DIABETES

Posted on 06:50 by Unknown
Mornin!

I'm writing to you to ask for your support in a very special cause.

This year, I'll be taking part in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Walk to Cure Diabetes along with a half-million other walkers across the country. Our goal: To raise $90 million to help fund research for a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications.

Type 1, or juvenile, diabetes, is a devastating, often deadly disease that affects millions of people--a large and growing percentage of them children.

Many people think type 1 diabetes can be controlled by insulin. While insulin does keep people with type 1 diabetes alive, it is NOT a cure. Aside from the daily challenges of living with type 1 diabetes, there are many severe, often fatal, complications caused by the disease.

That's the bad news... and yes, it's pretty bad.

The good news, though, is that JDRF is making steady progress toward a cure. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds more type 1 research than any other charity worldwide.

I'm writing to ask for your support because now more than ever, EACH of us can be a part of bringing about a cure. Each of us can make a real difference

Won't you please give to JDRF as generously as you're able?

Together, we can make the cure a reality.

Thank you,
Amanda

Please visit my Walk Web page if you would like to donate online or see how close I am to reaching my personal goal:

Today, I am thankful that I live in a free country.

I, as a woman, am able to hold any job (except for Navy SEAL) that a man can and vote.
I am able to dress how I want.
I eat when and where I want.
I get to make the choices.

These, and so many other freedoms have come at a cost.

For hundreds of years, men and women have fought to protect these freedoms. I am thankful for the men and women who fight with courage to protect this country and the freedoms that we experience here.

I am thankful for daylight savings time.

I know, I know. So many people hate it. I get it. I would too if I had to work until 5 or 6 and had to drive home in the dark. Hear me out...

1. Living in San Diego, we don't get to experience the seasons changing. To me, I equate Daylight Savings Time with it being Fall.
2. I have to wake up around 6, sometimes earlier, to be at work by 7:30. Waking up that early is ROUGH when you are getting ready in the dark.
3. I get off of work at 2:30, so I still have 2.5 hours of sunlight to enjoy.
4. I am like a toddler, I enjoy an 8:30 bedtime. With it getting darker earlier, it is easy for me to enjoy my toddler bedtime without feeling like I am missing out on so much.
5. When I fly home from Arizona it is as if an hour never happened. Consider it time travel. :)

I know that you may not agree with me, but I love it.

By the time Spring comes around, I am ready for it to feel like Spring and Summer, again the only thing that makes it real is the time change. :)

Today, I am thankful for all of the sweet little kids that I get to spend my days with. I feel like I am living an episode of "Kids Say the Darndest Things" whenever a kid opens his or her mouth to say something. Everyday is different but also the same. Different because I never know what they are going to say and the same in that everyday I hear something that makes me smile.

Here are some of my favorites so far...

"Miss Amanda, I want to live with you. Can I live with you? I want to live with you!"

"I can't wait to have my First Communion, my Grandma gives 50 Bucks when you do that!"

"Sh, like caSH. I'm gonna get lots of cash."

"Do you want to go to Justin Bieber with me?"

The icing on the cake today... My little friend that I hang out with everyday told me that she missed PreSchool because she got to sing all the time at PreSchool. I asked her what song she liked best and she started singing "Come, Now Is the Time to Worship." She sang and sang and sang. I couldn't help but watch her smile as she just sang.

I love these kids.

I am thankful for my Grandma Brown. She is a fabulous lady.

She was married to my Grandpa for almost 60 years, he died a few weeks shy of their 60th wedding anniversary. She is the mother to 9 kids , grandmother to 18, and great-grandmother to 2.

She has a college degree from SDSU.

She has served in countless philanthropic and civic clubs. She has been a member of the same Parish for over 60 years, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Religious education teacher.

She is brilliant.

I am thankful for all of the time that I get to spend with her going to Cabrillo Club events, grocery shopping, and to get chocolate shakes.

She is the best.

Today, I am thankful for my neighbors.

J,K, S, and P are good people. They each bring their own flare to this world, and I am thankful to know each one of them.

We have joked around that she should be included when an appraisal is done on the property. She is an incredible friend. She is an amazing cook. She is just all around wonderful. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. The kids next door are some of the best.

Today, the girls had a date with "Aunt Amanda." We spent a lazy Saturday morning in front of the TV before heading down to a Soccer Game. Paige played while Sammy and I cheered the Purple Panthers on. From there, we headed home to relax and have lunch. Paige went on a date with "Aunt Kim" so Sammy and I just hung out until Paige got back. We went to Mass with my Grandma and then I treated them to McDonald's before heading to a surprise party. These girls are SO easy to "babysit." They have GREAT manners, they are well behaved, and they just go with the flow.

I feel blessed that I get to be part of their family. I love getting to help the girls with homework. I cherish the times when we are snuggled up on the couch while one of them reads to me. Playing American Idol on Wii is way more fun when you are playing it with a 7 and 9 year old. I am just beyond thankful that I live next door to such great people.

Today, I am thankful for SO MUCH.
Alas, that is too vague for this blog series; I must focus on one particular thing.

So, I will say that I am thankful for a bed to sleep in, a roof over my head, and food in my belly. As hard has life has been at times, I have never gone without. I have never wondered where I would lay my head to rest or when I would eat again. I am among the richest in the world when you consider that I have a car, have a job, have a college education, and have money in my bank account.

I am thankful that all of my needs, and more, are met on a daily basis.

Numero Cuatro

Posted on 16:03 by Unknown
That is Number 4 for all of you non-Spanish speakers. :)

I was recently catching up with a friend over Pomegranate Margaritas and Chips & White Sauce at Miguel's, as I often do, and I was reminded, once again, of just how much my cup tends to runneth over. Destiny, the person not the thing, reminded me that even having 2 close, reliable, and tangible friends makes a person rich. Since I know that this is true, I also much admit that I think I won the lottery when it comes to friendships. (Consider this a follow-up to my blog about friendships that aren't.)

I have amazing friends all over the place. Seattle, Sonora, Chandler, San Bernadino, LA, Irvine, Nashville, Spartanburg, Oklahoma City, Lynchburg, Portland, Phoenix, San Diego, Boulder, and so many more places feel like home to me. These places feel like home because of the people that live there. Again, I am rich.

Just yesterday, I met a friend for coffee after work. I left Point Loma, headed north on the 5 to Del Mar.

(Side-note, the Starbucks that we met at was right next to a Papyrus store. If you have read this blog for longer than a few posts or know me at all, you know that I LOVE to write REAL letters and cards and that Papyrus stationery is BY FAR my favorite. I can't be next to a store without going in. I walked out with 80 cards that are just waiting to be mailed.)

We sat for a couple of hours just catching up on life. We talked about everything and nothing at the same time. We did what friends do. We talked about life and all that it entails.

From Del Mar, I headed back to Point Loma, where I hung out with my precious Freighbor (Friend+Neighbor=Freighbor). Again, we talked about life and all that it entails. Again, we did what friends do.

From Freighbor's house, I headed to my favorite Fiji Yogurt for a yogurt date with another friend. As with the other friend encounters yesterday, we talked about life. We did what friends do.

All this to say, Today, I am thankful for my friends. I am thankful for the friends that loved me through my freak-out of a lifetime in Ireland. I am thankful for my friends that didn't judge me for moving half-way to Nashville and then turning around to head back to San Diego. I am thankful for my friends that send me cards just because. I am thankful for friends that are honest with me and expect honesty in return. I am thankful for friends that speak that hard truths to me.

I am thankful for the ridiculous amount of ridiculously amazing friends that I have.

I am rich!

Today, I am thankful that I love where I work.
It has been a long time since I both loved my job and where I worked.

The people that I work with make it easy to get up and go to work.
The Principal leads by example; she will never ask us to do something that she herself isn't willing to do.

I recognize that I am extremely blessed to have a full time job that provides for me and gives me amazing medical benefits, as I stated yesterday. I also recognize that I am even more blessed that my job is both enjoyable and at a place that I love.

I hope that you find yourself in a job that you enjoy. It doesn't have to be you dream job or your 'career' mine isn't, but I still love it! :)

Number 2

Posted on 06:40 by Unknown
I am thankful that I have a job that provides me with amazing medical and dental benefits. Mainly the ability to go to counseling as often as I want for NOTHING.

I have always been a firm believer in therapy. I think that EVERYONE should go to therapy. And in that, if you are someone who thinks you don't "need" therapy, you should probably be the first in line, I am just sayin. :)

I have had a few counselors since I moved home, and not because I therapist hop, but because I see the "intern" and they are only around for a year at a time. It has actually been really therapeutic even in those times of change.

I am so thankful that I have a safe and unbiased place to talk. Some sessions, I can talk for the whole hour and some sessions I am in there for 15 minutes and leave. Either way, it is nice to have the option.

Do you have a safe and unbiased place to share your heart and feelings and fears?
Do you see a counselor or therapist regularly? Why or Why Not?

Number 1

I am thankful for this blog and the community of readers.

This blog has served as somewhat of a second therapy for me. I write what is on my heart. Sometimes, the posts are full of joy and sometimes they are full of sorrow. Either way, they are full of heart.

This blog wouldn't be what it is without YOU the readers. I have felt so blessed by the support that I get on this blog. It feels good to know that I am not the only one with these feelings and that I am not crazy.

So, THANK-YOU for supporting me and loving me on this journey.

I am thankful for this blog and for the ones that read it. :)

No, Thank-YOU November

Posted on 09:49 by Unknown
I absolutely LOVE the fall.

I always miss Seattle and Colorado this time of year. I miss the feeling of crisp air on your skin, watching the leaves change colors and fall to the ground, and getting to wear scarves and cute coats. I love me some San Diego, but I also love me some Fall. Unfortunately, we don't really get to experience "seasons" in San Diego.

Every year, I go to Thanksgiving at my Grandma and Grandpa Brown's house. Grandpa passed away in June, so this is the first Thanksgiving without Grandpa. It will be tough to be there without him, but life goes on. It must go on. Before we eat, we all gather in the living room where the tables are set up, all 40 or so of us, we circle up and hold hands. Everyone, yes EVERYONE, has to say what they are thankful for. Some of the things make us laugh and some of the things make us cry.

Thinking of what to say is always a process for me. I dont' want to say something trivial and I don't want to say something that I just thought of on a whim. I want to say something that I truly am Thankful for.

So, with all of this thinking, I saw a blog series waiting to happen. So, everyday in Novemeber, until Thanksgiving, I am going to post a blog about things that I am thankful for. 25 blogs in 25 days. Some blogs will be long, and some will be short. Either way, they will be full of heart and deep joy.

Can't wait to share number 1 with you all a little later today. :)
